Welcome to my contra dance homepage. I started calling in 2006. I focus on creating engaging programs with great flow and minimal but effective teaching.
When not calling I am an avid dancer, an occasional dance choreographer, a volunteer sound technician, and dance organizer and a community web site manager. My calling draws on this lifetime of experience in the dancing community.
If you are holding a contradance event and need a caller, e-mail me. I’m always excited to call and dance in new places. Feel free to contact me for references.
I’m currently based in Pittsburgh, PA where I was a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University and now work as a research scientist for educational technology. Periodically, I call the local dance.
What is contra dance?
Aside from saying it’s lots of fun, I’m not going to try to come up with an explanation. Other people have already done their best on Wikipedia and elsewhere. Searching for contra dance on YouTube yields a lot of videos. But the only way to really know is to show up at a dance, which you can find using TryContra. So, stop by your local dance sometime – you don’t need to bring a partner, and there is often a beginner’s workshop before the dance to help you get your footing.
